展覧会概要

Dirty Butterfly
私は最近まで東京で英語講師のアルバイトをしていました。私の生徒たちは、人生におけるさまざまな経験をよく語ってくれました。私はこれらの話を書きとめて集めました。生徒たちの話は、単に経験談として興味深いばかりでなく、日本の文化や歴史を垣間見ることができるものです。本プロジェクトでは、生徒たちの話をもとに絵画を制作しています。各作品は彼らの言葉を直接引用し題材にしております。私の生徒の多くは自衛隊や航空会社に勤めておられて、ご高齢の方もいます。一番熱心な生徒は日本の自衛隊の一佐です。そのため、戦争、航空技術、飛行などがこの作品の主題となっています。普段はドローイングや想像を軸に絵画作品を制作していますが、今回の作品の一部は写真を参考にしています。その理由は、描こうとしている出来事を写真以外の方法で目にしたり、想像だけを頼りに描いたりすることが難しかったからです。しかし、写真のような絵画を描きたいとは思っていません。写真は、あくまで写っているものとは異なるイメージを表現するためのスタート地点として利用するものと捉えています。

Dirty Butterfly
Until recently, I was teaching English at an eikaiwa in Tokyo. My students often told me their life experiences. I have been writing down and collecting these stories. Rather than being anecdotal, these narratives provide insights into Japanese culture and history. My current project takes these narratives, and uses them as the basis for paintings. Each painting is based on a direct quote from a student. Many of my students are in the military, work for airlines, or are elderly. My most notable student is a colonel in the Japanese defense force. Therefore, war, aviation and flight are prominent themes in this work. I usually develop paintings from drawing studies and imagination. However, photographs have been used as a reference for some of these new paintings, as it was not possible to access or conjure the subject being depicted. But I have avoided making works that look photographic: the photographic sources have been used loosely as a starting point to make different imagery.

ルーク・クラウチ / Luke Crouch

東京を拠点に活動するオーストラリア出身のアーティストルーク・クラウチは、自身のドローイングや記憶を要素にペインティングを制作し、想像の世界を表現する。
彼の創作活動はオールド・マスターといった美術史の巨匠や日本の江戸時代の絵画、レーヴ・カルチャー、航空術などに影響を受けている。
